Five candidates running for election to the position of San Mateo County District 1 supervisor are expected to be on hand to take questions at two forums in March. The countywide all-mail-in-ballot election begins on April 4 and ends on May 3.
The first forum, put on by the Bay Area Youth Summit, takes place between 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the San Mateo City Council Chambers at 1900 O’Farrell St. in San Mateo.
The second forum is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center at 1455 Madison Ave. in Redwood City. This event will be co-hosted by the Redwood City Woodside Democratic Club, the San Mateo County Democrats, and the Peninsula Young Democrats.
Candidates expected to attend are, in ballot order, Burlingame Mayor Terry Nagel, Deputy Attorney General Gina Papan, businessman Michael G. Stogner, educator and consumer advocate Richard Holober, and school trustee and businessman Dave Pine.
The winner will fill the District 1 seat formerly occupied by Mark Church, who left the Board of Supervisors to run for and win (in November) the multiple-position office of assessor, county clerk-recorder, and chief elections officer.
Although District 1 represents communities at the northern end of the county, from South San Francisco extending south to San Mateo and the San Francisco International Airport, every registered voter in the county has a vote.
In addition to being mailed in, ballots can be dropped off at the elections office at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo and in ballot boxes in every city or town hall in the county, but they must be received by May 3.
This is a critically important race to Menlo Park residents (and others) because the county employee pension based debt is even more frightening than what has happened to the cities and towns – and we taxpayers hold the bag for county debt, no-one else. It’s painfully obvious – there has to be a leadership attitude change among the five county supervisors before county employee costs will be seriously addressed. This election and the one coming next year are our chance as voters to make that change from old thinking to reality.

Her response was “She wasn’t aware the three were running?….Really?

I think it is fair to say that the 110 Unions in San Mateo County have picked the 4 candidates they want the public to know about.
