A benefit concert and events at local schools are contributing to Japan relief efforts following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
On Friday, April 29, noted violinist Anne Akiko Meyers will present a benefit concert at 8 p.m. in the Woodside High School Center for Performing Arts. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Ms. Meyers, who has been featured soloist with the world’s leading orchestras, will perform both Japanese and Western classical pieces with pianist Wendy Chen.

‘Special Friends Day’
The children at Oak Knoll School in Menlo Park raised $4,409 for Japanese relief on “Special Friends Day,” held March 25 at the elementary school. Two days before, the entire school, from kindergarten through fifth grade, folded origami hearts to give to all those who donated. Instruction was given by the parents of Japanese students at the school via live school television.
All money raised was donated to “Save the Children,” an organization that specializes in helping children in crisis.
Japan Relief Day
Students at Phillips Brooks School in Menlo Park held a Japan Relief Day on April 8. The day was filled with activities and events to help students understand the tragedy facing Japan and what they could do to help.
The day began with an all-school assembly, which included a video of student interviews on the importance of helping those in Japan. Following the video, a fifth-grade student of Japanese descent gave a presentation on the cultural tradition and daily life of Japanese students. The children also saw a video produced by the Covenant Community School International in Tokyo.
After the assembly, students made and decorated cards, which will be sent to the elderly in Japan. Japan Relief Day was the culmination of a third-grade first-aid and school-supply drive. The students are shipping more than 500 pounds of first-aid and school supplies to Japan.
