A more expansive role may be coming someday soon for the Traffic Committee, one of many citizen-volunteer committees in Portola Valley that advise the Town Council on matters of policy. A new Traffic Committee charter is one topic for discussion when the council meets on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
In addition to the committee’s duties of being receptive to residents’ concerns about the use of the town’s roads and being thoughtful about ways to improve safety, the council will consider having the committee also address bicycle and pedestrian issues, according to a staff report.
New responsibilities on these matters could include their treatment in the town’s general plan, the “safe routes to schools” program, and outreach to town residents and nearby communities, the report said.
Also on the agenda: a request to double the $3,500 budget to celebrate the Portola Valley School District’s 150th anniversary. In part, the request reflects the rescheduling to this event of the town picnic, which is normally held in June but was disrupted this year by an untimely forecast of rain.
Yvonne Tryce, who chairs the Nature & Science Committee, is scheduled to ask the council for signatures on a form from the state Department of Fish and Game.
The permit will allow Ms. Tryce to accept various contributions to the town’s natural history collection. In a letter to the council, she said new items include a small bird’s nest, the body of a hawk electrocuted in the act of grabbing a squirrel from a high-voltage pole, and a the body of a moth that “fell out” of her garage door as it opened.
