Playing in temperatures much like they endured in Fresno a couple weeks ago, the Menlo girls’ tennis team overcame the heat and visiting Aragon, 6-1, in a nonleague match on Monday.
The Knights (5-1) will have the rest of this week off before heading into three tough matches next week against Sacred Heart Prep, Monta Vista and Harker. The unbeaten Gators will provide good competition for Menlo in its West Bay Athletic League opener while Monta Vista will offer a chance for the Knights to avenge their only loss — which came in Fresno.
“We’re going to have to pick it up a little,” said Menlo coach Bill Shine, whose team finished third in the California Classic in Fresno on Sept. 10. “They’ll step up though.”
Menlo took on Aragon without No. 1 singles player Giannina Ong, but the Knights still had plenty of depth. Sophomore Kristy Jorgensen took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kaede Ishikawa at No. 1 singles and fellow sophomore Christine Eliazo won after leading 6-0, 3-1 then won by default (heat). Freshman Liz Yao wrapped up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Victoria Sun at No. 3 singles and junior Laura Gradiska defeated Melissa Ma, 7-6, (7-2), 6-1.
In doubles, Paulina Golikova and Helena Ong fell in a super-tiebreaker to Christina Hsu and Amy Jiang, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9, at No. 1. Sam Hoag and Kacie Madeira posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jamie Ahn and Emily Yip, and Sarah Schinasi and Tiffany Zhong won 6-3, 6-3.
In other tennis matches Monday, Sacred Heart Prep (5-0) continued to play well in the early season and dispatched host Mountain View, 5-2. The Gators dropped the first two singles matches but swept the rest to get a busy week off to a good start.
Sacred Heart will host Burlingame on Wednesday (4 p.m.), host King’s Academy on Thursday (3:45 p.m.) and host St. Ignatius on Friday (3:45 p.m.) while tuning up for its big match with Menlo on Sept. 27.
Girls golf
Castilleja opened defense of its West Bay Athletic League regular-season title by defeating Harker, 233-257, on Monday at Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo. The Gators (1-0, 2-0) were led by freshman Chloe Sales, who shot 41.
Girls’ volleyball
Sacred Heart Prep continued its strong preseason showing by trailing to Mountain View on Monday and posting a 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-13 victory over the Spartans, who feature Stanford-bound Brittany Howard.
SHP junior Sonia Abuel-Saud led the way with 18 kills and 23 digs.
Boys’ water polo
Senior captain Eric Turnquist and junior Kyle Walden scored four goals a piece, and Ryan Valentine scored once but it wasnt enough as Priory dropped a 14-9 nonleague decision to Carlmont on Monday.
Co-captain Max Barnes started and made eight saves in goal. Junior keeper Daniel Warner had four saves in the fourth quarter. Priory next travels to Mills on Thursday for its second PAL Ocean Division match of the season.
