A memorial service is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, for Menlo Park resident Robert Samuel Hunter III, a lifelong teacher and the founder of the Friends of Millard Fillmore Trivia Hunt, a popular student exercise in problem-solving, critical thinking, good judgment and fair play.
Mr. Hunter died July 14, after a long illness and in the company of his family, relatives said. He was 79. The memorial service will be held at St. Denis Church at 2250 Avy Avenue in West Menlo Park, where he was a parishioner and volunteer for 45 years, relatives said.
The Trivia Hunt, held nearly every February since 1969, presents high school students, most of them in San Mateo County, with trivia questions, read aloud. Students have a weekend to find answers from printed sources. The “trivial” aspect reflects the low estimation held of Millard Fillmore, the 13th U.S. president, according to the contest website.
Mr. Hunter was born in Berkeley, attended school in San Carlos and San Mateo and, aside from service in the U.S. Navy, lived in the Bay Area for his entire, relatives said. He married Marlene Mori in 1956.
From Stanford University, he had bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science and a master’s in education, and from the University of San Francisco, a doctorate in organization and leadership.
At Carlmont High School in Belmont, he taught social studies for 16 years and was an administrator for 22 years. He served as PTA president at Woodside High School and on the board of the Las Lomitas School District.
Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife Marlene; sister Sandra Rock; daughters Kelly Sexton and Kerry Saunders; son Kevin and nine grandchildren.
