The San Mateo Police Department’s loss is San Mateo County’s gain, as the city’s longtime deputy police chief Michael Callagy takes on the new post of deputy county manager.

Mr. Callagy is retiring from the Police Department after a 29-year career there. His last day will be Nov. 11.

In the county post, Mr. Callagy will focus on public safety, working with the Sheriff’s Office, district attorney and the probation department, County Manager John Maltbie said.

“The criminal justice system is undergoing dramatic changes statewide,” Mr. Maltbie said. “Mike has the experience to ensure that we keep our neighborhoods safe while we also provide the types of programs that are proven to reduce recidivism.”

Mr. Callagy’s additional duties will be to provide executive direction to emergency communications, and oversee the construction of a new emergency communications and operations center, according to the county manager’s office.

In San Mateo, he moved up the ranks at the police department, and was involved in the investigations side of the business, in narcotics and the criminal investigations fields, as well as undercover work.

He served as a supervisor, manager and detective, among other capacities. For seven years, he has been deputy chief.

Mr. Callagy received his master’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur University and a juris doctorate degree from Santa Clara University while working as a police officer.

In 2010, he received a master’s degree in homeland security and defense from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. He is a member of the California State Bar and a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Mr. Callagy and his wife live on the Peninsula with their four children.

  1. This article doesn’t mention that in 2005, it was Callagy , through the prodding of a victim’s advocate, who decided to pursue a search warrant against Dr. William Ayres, after one of Ayres’ victims died in a motorcycle accident.

  2. Might we add that Callagy was one of the only people in authority in San Mateo involved in the Ayres case who did the right thing.
