As of about 10:15 a.m. Pacific time today, John Tarlton, a Menlo Park businessman who left Oceanside on June 10 in a time-trial-like bicycle race across the country, had crossed the Mississippi River, completing 2,089 miles.
He is using ice to comfort his shoulders and needs constant resupply of nutrients, according to his crew chief, David Johnson.
Mr. Tarlton had 933 miles to the Race Across America finish line in Annapolis, Maryland, according to tractalis.com, which is tracking the racers.
His speed at the time of this last update was 17.4 mph.
Mr. Tarlton, 45, is riding to raise money for the Stanford Cancer Institute.
Crew chief Johnson said in an email:
“We are following John now and have been since 8 am. He got in last night at 4 am. All that matters is our routine to keep him on the bike with his nutrients a constant chore and worry. Ice packs on his shoulders. Catering to his various and growing physical challenges.
“His spirits are good, he is riding per our plan re heart rate and watts. We need to keep pushing without panic toward the finish line.”
