The Federal Aviation Administration is warning fans headed to the Super Bowl in Santa Clara on Sunday to leave their drones at home, but restrictions also apply to people, including Almanac readers, at home and maybe not even paying attention to the big game.
Between 2 p.m. and midnight on Sunday, Feb. 7, the FAA is banning drone flights from anywhere within 32 nautical miles of Levi’s Stadium – a circle that, as the crow flies, includes Woodside, Portola Valley, Atherton and Menlo Park.
Drones are not alone in being restricted during and after the Super Bowl. The 32-mile restriction also applies to any non-commercial flight unless the pilot has filed a flight plan, is using a transponder to identify the aircraft, and is in two-way communication with air traffic controllers.
Use of the airspace within 10 nautical miles of the stadium is much more tightly regulated.
