Though Kate Laubscher, a sophomore at Northeastern University from Woodside, won’t advance to the Jeopardy college championship finals, she will walk away from the competition with a $10,000 semifinalist prize.
Despite her acumen at a questions relating to pop culture (three of her correct answers were: “what is Jessica Jones?” “What is emo?” and “who are nudists?”), she ultimately fell behind Sarah Dubnik of the University of Pittsburgh and Ziad Ali of North Carolina State University in the semifinals of the competition, broadcast on ABC-TV on Tuesday night, Feb. 10.
In the final question, she doubled her score to $14,000 by correctly answering the clue, “At 24 he began a verse retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth, including a character named Caspian,” with “Who is C.S. Lewis?”
However, it wasn’t enough to catch Mr. Ali’s $18,201 points or finalist Ms. Dubnik’s $35,601.
Ms. Laubscher, who studies political science and communications, was asked by the show’s host, Alex Trebek, what she plans to do after college. She said she doesn’t know but wants to combine the two.
