Homemade fireworks are being reported as the cause of an explosion heard around 9:15 p.m. in Woodside on Sunday, Sept. 25, according to a message from Town Manager Kevin Bryant.

Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office investigated and said they suspect that the fireworks were thrown from the window of a vehicle in the vicinity of Woodside and Moore roads, Mr. Bryant said.

The Sheriff’s Office received a number of phone calls from “concerned citizens” who heard the blast, according to a bulletin from the San Mateo County Alert System.

The explosion elicited a deluge of posts on the town’s neighborhood online forum, one resident told the Almanac.

  1. It’s curious the quick distinction made by the Sheriff’s department last night between a homemade “firework” and a “bomb.” Is this distinction to distract from terrorism concerns? I fail to see the difference if someone is building explosive packages and throwing them from a moving car. When does a firework become a bomb?

  2. Oh, good heavens! Some fool playing with fireworks and the first post is talking terrorism! When was the last terrorist act in Woodside? (by all means, please set your “snark throttle” to ‘full’ when replying!)

When was the last terrorist act in San Mateo County?

Sweet Baby J, were you even alive in the sixties and seventies?!?

Stop living in constant fear. We live in Woodside, forchrissakes!

  3. Realist – you are totally correct… gotta BBQ – I don’t think this was a “terrorist” act, far from it, I am pointing out the quick distinction put forth by the Sheriff and the double standard in our society which I think is interesting. Food for thought.
