The list of potential candidates running for local office in San Mateo County in the Nov. 6 election has grown by seven since late Monday, the first day of the candidate filing period.
Information from local city and town clerks, and rosters published by the San Mateo County Elections Office show new potential candidacies for local town councils, school districts, and a local fire protection district.
In Menlo Park, Cecilia Taylor picked up papers to run for a City Council seat representing District 1, the Belle Haven neighborhood.
The city switched to a district election system for 2018 after receiving a lawsuit threat that alleged the city’s at-large voting system made it harder for minorities to be elected.
In Portola Valley, Councilwoman Maryann Derwin and Mayor John Richards have picked up nomination papers from Town Hall, the town clerk said.
Scott Saywell also picked up nomination papers for a seat on the board of the Menlo Park City School District.
In the Menlo Park Fire Protection District, appointed incumbent Robert Jones has taken out papers. And Atherton resident Colleen E. Haight, a professor of economics at San Jose State University, also picked up nomination papers. (Haight said on July 20 that she has decided not to run.)
Julian Alberto Garcia, a special education aide and resident of East Palo Alto, picked up papers for a seat on the board of the Ravenswood City School District.
Jon Venverloh, a technology executive and parent, completed his paperwork and is qualified to run for a seat on the board of the Las Lomitas Elementary School District. Venverloh’s community of residence is not shown on the roster.
Names on the county’s roster are listed as “pending” until after election officials have verified that the required 20 to 30 people who signed a would-be candidate’s nomination papers are registered voters. With verification of the signatures, the candidate is listed as “qualified.”
