A home on McCormick Lane near Watkins Avenue in Atherton was reportedly burglarized sometime over the weekend, according to a police department press release on Monday, April 22.
Atherton police responded to the incident shortly after 7:30 a.m. Monday. Burglars entered the home by breaking a rear sliding glass door and stole items with a total value of $28,000, Sgt. David Gomez said in an email.
The identities of the burglars are currently unknown.
Police also reported Sunday, April 21, that a 34-year-old Redwood City man was arrested after allegedly stealing a car and evading police last week.
At 4:20 p.m. on April 18, an Atherton police sergeant attempted to pull over the man, who was reportedly driving recklessly on El Camino Real near Encinal Avenue, according to police.
The driver fled into oncoming traffic and abandoned the car nearby in a parking lot on the 1300 block of El Camino Real. Witnesses told police that the man then jumped a fence into a neighboring construction site.
Officers learned the registered owner of the vehicle was on parole for burglary, and they found narcotics and burglary tools while searching the car, police said.
As officers were looking for the man with a police dog, a car was reportedly stolen about a half-mile away on the 100 block of Laurel Street, police said.
Shortly before 9 a.m. April 19, San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies spotted the man on the 2500 block of Spring Street in Redwood City, where he was driving the same car he had abandoned the previous day. He was arrested for vehicle theft, felony evading, possession of stolen property and a parole violation, police said.
The stolen vehicle has not yet been recovered.
Atherton has seen a spike in residential burglaries since November, prompting town staff to study the impacts of installing license plate readers and security cameras around town. Police plan to hold a community meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, to update residents on the investigations into the burglaries and discuss crime prevention, safety, alarms and surveillance cameras.

So let me get this straight… the cops chased after a guy who dumped the car in a parking lot, and then ran off, stole another car, and somehow came back to his car unattended car, which had been searched, and took it back?! Why was the car not impounded on site? Why was it not being monitored? What are the police actually doing in this town?!?!?
I think a 3rd grader or beginning ESL student would have trouble concluding the suspect circled back to get the original car.

The suspect did in fact abandon his car in Atherton, steal another car on Laurel Street and was back in his car when sheriff’s deputies arrested him in Redwood City, according to Atherton police. Per Atherton Sgt. Chris Vigil: The vehicle was abandoned on private property, and unless needed for evidence (in this case it was not) the vehicle would then be towed by the request of the property owner.
