When it comes to the climate crisis, are massive “megacities” part of the problem, or part of the solution? According to Stanford University medical professor Dr. Michelle Barry, the answer is both.
Barry, who also directs the Center for Innovation and Global Health at Stanford, will speak to the many opportunities and challenges that large urban centers present at an event Wednesday, September 18, at Ladera Community Church.
Cities consume more than 60% of the world’s energy and produce 70% of its global waste. But as many cities accelerate toward populations of 10 million or more, new innovations are also on the rise. In her talk, Barry will describe the threats to megacities brought on by climate change, and report on new solutions being implemented in areas such as food security and built environments to make urban areas more resilient.
“She’s a dynamic speaker — provocative, and at the same time, authoritative,” said Linda Clever, a fellow Stanford physician and member of Ladera Community Church who invited Barry to speak. “Listening to her is a way of pushing our own frontiers in understanding climate change. Bring your friends, relatives, and perfect strangers.”
The event will begin with an informal gathering with Barry at 5 p.m. at the church, located at 3300 Alpine Road in Portola Valley, followed by the talk and a question-and-answer session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
