Almanac Online - Lasting Memories - Nicholas Leonard Spetzler's memorial

Nicholas Leonard Spetzler
March 24, 2004-April 23, 2020
Portola Valley, California

Our beloved son, Nicholas, passed away on April 23rd at the age of 16. This was a sudden and unexpected exit, although Nico did have a known heart condition. He had had a good day, taking walks in the California spring, working on his Dungeons & Dragons world to play with his friends. Nico was in a good place in his too-short life – engaging in lively debate the evening before with his grandparents after a lovely dinner. He was more and more a positive leader in our family, in his Waldorf high school community, and in his LARP circle of friends, which was his foremost passion. He was happy and thriving and was a remarkable and lovely young man. We can all feel very grateful for our time with him and he will be very much missed. Nicholas benefited from local educators who made special contributions to his life and for whom we are also grateful. Among them are the staff at Ormondale and Corte Madera schools, Teacher Jeannie Goldman, who does art at Portola Valley Town Center, the librarians at the town center who kept a watchful eye, Ajmir Thompkins at New Horizons after school care, Mike Agoff and his family, who have been teaching karate to generations of local kids, and the staff of Alpine Hills. We have had a community of support and thank everyone for the kindness and care with which they filled his world. Nicholas is survived by his father, Chris, mother Svetlana, and brothers Alex and Thomas.
