Urban farming pioneer to give talk

Will Allen, urban farming pioneer and national food policy leader, will open this year's Wallace Stegner lecture series at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. The talk will be followed by a book signing and reception.

The evening kicks off the 20th anniversary of the series, presented annually by the Peninsula Open Space Trust. Speakers explore issues related to land, nature, and the environment in honor of the late author and conservationist Wallace Stegner.

Will Allen started his career in the 1970s as a basketball player. Retiring from sports, he joined Proctor & Gamble in marketing and sales. Son of a sharecropper, he eventually left corporate life to return to his roots in farming.

He purchased a plot of inner-city land in Milwaukee, which evolved into his current nonprofit, Growing Power. He now oversees an urban farming program that trains community members to grow food using resources at hand.

Jean and Bill Lane provided underwriting for POST's lecture series upon its launch in 1993, and Jean Lane continues the tradition today in memory of Mr. Lane, who died in 2010. Embarcadero Media serves as media sponsor.

Tickets at $22 may be ordered from the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts box office at 903-6000. Series subscriptions are available for $325, $175 and $75 per person.
