Business: Bringing smoothies to your doorstep

by Jane Knoerle

You know you're supposed to eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but how many of us do?

Unless you dine daily at a salad bar, or keep your fridge stocked with a dozen different fruits and vegetables, it's hard to achieve that goal. Besides, making green smoothies at home is a frightful mess.

Husband-and-wife team Faruk Abdullah and Tasneem Manjra hope to solve the dilemma by bringing healthful fruit and veggie-packed smoothies right to your home or workplace. They launched their business, Bushel Whole Blended Juices, on April 1, working from Studio Cake's commercial kitchen in Menlo Park, where they prepare orders for delivery or on-site blends.

All Bushel drinks are whole blended, not juiced or pressed, they say. All edible parts of the fruits and vegetables are blended to order. No stabilizers or preservatives are used.

Bushel's menu now includes four drinks; however, they expect to expand their offerings over time. The 16-ounce smoothies are $7.99 each.

Green smoothies are the rage right now as a quick and convenient way to get those required servings of fruits and vegetables. Many fans also use them to lose weight quickly and safely.

The Bushel version of the popular smoothie is call the Green Dream. It contains kale, spinach, lemon, apple, orange, pineapple and a splash of pomegranate juice. It is the equivalent of four servings of fruit and veggies at 100-110 calories.

Beets Me contains beets, lemon, cucumber, pineapple and ginger, 2.5 servings of fruit and vegetables, and 90-100 calories. Apple of My Day contains three servings of fruits and vegetables and 370 calories, with kale, apple, banana, vanilla yogurt and vanilla coconut milk as ingredients. Avocado Bliss is avocado and vanilla coconut milk at 280 calories.

Bushel offers two options: delivery to their clients via GrubHub and Seamless services, and on-site blending at events and offices in the Bay Area.

Delivery is $3 per item, within a five-mile radius, with a minimum of $15.

Co-founder Tasneem Manjra is a technology marketing executive and avid food blogger. Faruk Abdullah is a medical device and biotechnology professional. Passionate about healthful living, both "wanted to provide a healthy superfood option that tastes great," says Ms. Manjra.
