People: Cameron Jones named in science competition

Cameron Jones, a sixth-grader at Corte Madera School in Portola Valley, is one of 300 national semifinalists in Broadcom MASTERS, a science, technology, engineering and math competition for middle-school students.

Cameron's project is called "We're Jammin': Using the Jamming Principle to Construct a Universal Gripper." For his project, he took on one of the biggest challenges in robotics: gripping an arbitrarily shaped object.

Thirty finalists, to be named Aug. 27, will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., Sept. 27-Oct.1 to showcase their science fair projects and compete in a four-day competition for awards and prizes, including the top education award of $25,000.
