Seven arrested for purchasing alcohol for minors
On Tuesday, Jan. 12, Menlo Park police officers and agents from California's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control arrested seven people for purchasing alcohol for minors in or around Menlo Park, according to a police department announcement.
To catch adults who purchase alcohol for those under 21, a minor supervised by a police officer stands outside a liquor or convenience store and asks visitors to buy them alcohol, indicating that he or she is not old enough to purchase it. The police department received a grant from the Alcoholic Beverage Control department to conduct these decoy operations in an effort to reduce underage drinking.
If adults agree to buy the alcohol, they are arrested and cited for furnishing alcohol to the minor. The penalty is a minimum of $1,000 and 24 hours of community service.
