A motivating fear for Russia, that may have prompted its aggression towards Ukraine and the gas pipeline that traverses it, is the realization that the world is moving away from fossil fuel. This is a huge change that is being imposed on Russia, and it could further weaken its economy.
The trend towards renewable energy means that EU demand for Russia's major export will decline in the future. Russia's major export is gas and oil, and losing that revenue stream must seem unacceptable.
We — that is, all countries — need to make moving away from fossil fuel as advantageous as possible for all energy producers, including Russia. There should be incentives that support gas producers like Russia to develop and invest in new technology. Reversing the current global dependence on gas moves all countries towards renewable and sustainable fuels.
The U.S. government has done this with our gas and oil companies — made policies and regulations but also incentives to encourage investment in renewable energy.
What if NATO or the U.S. treated Russia like a giant corporation, acknowledged its dependence on gas and used incentives for it to join the rest of the world in the fight against climate change and towards energy resiliency? Make it a win-win.
