Around Town: Bird Discovery Day in Portola Valley

Bird is the word from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Portola Valley Town Center at 765 Portola Road. The Nature and Science Committee is sponsoring Bird Discovery Day, an afternoon for visitors of all ages to talk with local bird authorities and interact with live birds, including an eagle, tropical birds and chickens (in a cage).

There will also be nests, feathers under microscopes, books on birds from the Portola Valley public library, and a veterinarian with information on how to care for birds at home.

You can learn about the different sizes and colors of bird eggs, how to arrange gardens so as to attract birds, and the hazards that birds face in the wild, including West Nile virus.

Representatives from the Audubon Society, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Wildlife Rescue are expected to be on hand, as will the food truck Grilled Cheese Bandits and the fruit popsicle vendor.

St. Francis Center

An evening of dinner and dancing Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Circus Club in Atherton will benefit the St. Francis Center of Redwood City. Guests will gather at 4 p.m. for appetizers, cocktails and a silent auction, to be followed at 5 p.m. by dinner and dancing to the Big Band music of the Fil Lorenz orchestra.

Tickets are $100 per person with cocktail attire suggested. All proceeds will go directly to fund programs and services of the center.

St. Francis Center, located at 151 Buckingham Ave. in Redwood City, is a nonprofit organization that provides housing, food, clothing and education to residents of Redwood City. For more information, call 365-7829.
