Portola Valley woman fatally struck by train

A Caltrain traveling through Palo Alto fatally struck a woman near West Meadow Drive in Palo Alto on Saturday, July 23.

On July 28, the Santa Clara County Coroner-Medical Examiner's office identified the person struck as Julie Allison Kraushaar Zurcher, 62, of Portola Valley. The coroner has not yet determined whether the death was by suicide.

Caltrain spokesperson Dan Lieberman said there were approximately 200 passengers on northbound train No. 253 at the time of the collision, which happened at approximately 4:47 p.m.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office's Transit Police Bureau is investigating the incident.
