The choice to NOT have kids

Original post made by Diana, another community, on Mar 6, 2007

The SF Chronicle Magazine had an interesting article last Sunday called Kids R Not Us, about people's attitudes regarding the choice not to have kids. Here is the link: Web Link

Maybe I've been lucky in terms of the people I hang around with, but as a person who has chosen not to have kids, I've not encountered any of the negative reactions to my decision that some people interviewed for the story have had. One woman without kids was quoted in the article as saying there's "a public-policy and religious and cultural stigma" in choosing not to procreate. Anybody out there have relevant opinions about this issue? Or experiences? Am I just oblivious to a real societal disdain for my choice, or were the people in the article paranoid?

I am a mom of three and I strongly believe anyone's choice should be respected. There is nothing wrong in deciding to live a more adult life,a life that doesn't involve the word MOM (believe me, I myself think of the days I had no kids with VERY fond memories!!) .
Having kids is a big, big choice and a life time commitment to a different style of living. I applaude the maturity of those who decide it is not for them.

Being a mother is a privilege and a joy and a terrifyingly enormous responsibility. I wouldn't trade it, but I'm not so insecure that I feel threatened by people who choose not to reproduce.
