The nonprofit Project Read matches volunteers with adult learners -- either native English speakers with limited or no reading skills or English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
Students work one-on-one with their students, meeting once or twice a week.
Beyond the basics of teaching reading and writing skills or improving speaking skills, student goals may include working toward a job opportunity, helping children with school work, or reading a newspaper.
Many students are waiting to be matched with a tutor, Project Read staff members say.
Tutor training is held at the Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St. To register, call Roberta Roth at 330-2525 or e-mail her at email@example.com.
