On Tuesday, November 13, Menlo-Atherton High School kicked off Feed Our Families 2007, our annual drive to feed families within Menlo-Atherton's community. In November and December, the students and staff of Menlo-Atherton collect money and non-perishable goods in an effort to feed at least 400 of our own families. At the end of the drive, each family receives at least two weeks worth of non-perishable plus fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, bread, a large bag of rice and 1-2 whole chickens. The uniqueness of this event comes through the collection and organizational efforts of the entire M-A community which then circles back to take care of our own families and neighbors in need.
Feed Our Families started many years ago in Coach Parks garage and several 49er’s such as Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Jerry Rice who still lives in our community. In 1999, Mr. Fontana the new Activity Director at the time, brought leadership into the mix and brought the canned food drive on campus. It started with a goal of 5000 cans and those kids collected 5200 cans to help M-A families only. It grew and grew and grew. It grew last year to a goal of 110,000 and we collected 116,000 cans; we helped not only our own families, but numerous families in the community and local churches and food banks. Most people don’t realize that many of the families that we provide boxes for are for our own students. These will also be some of the hardest working kids when it comes to collecting. Families in need are some of the most courageous and creative when it comes to taking care of the family. This is our way to make it a bit easier during the holidays.
This is an event that truly brings the school together. Homecoming ties us together in spirit, but Feed Our Families ties us together in heart and soul!!! It truly brings out the good in people whether they are canning, sorting, organizing, delivering, or inspiring. Although it is a M-A function, it reaches out into the community.
Students began canning at Safeway and Trader Joe’s in Menlo Park and Key Market in Redwood City this week. Monetary donations may be dropped off at the school to help make bulk purchases of perishable items. Non-perishable items may be dropped off in B-21, the leadership room on the Menlo-Atherton campus.
Feed Our Families will finish with final organization on campus on Wednesday, December 5th and Thursday, December 6th. Families will be able to pick up the items on Friday, December 7th. Deliveries will be made on Saturday, December 8th from 8:00am to 1:00pm.
