In tonight’s deeper darkness in Portola Valley — the town regulates outdoor light intensity to preserve the blackness of the night sky — people will gather near a soccer field at Town Center to gaze through telescopes at objects in the universe.

Those objects are expected to include the moon and planets, and nebulae and double stars beyond the solar system, according to an invitation to the public from the town’s Nature and Science Committee. Astronomers will be on hand for guidance and questions.

This free event begins at 8 p.m. at 765 Portola Road and includes astronomy-related exhibits and activities in the Buckeye Room in the community hall.
