With all the hubbub over whether schools should show President Barack Obama speech today that urges students to take responsibility for their education, local districts appear to have left it up to principals and teachers.
Ken Ranella, superintendent of the Menlo Park City School District, sent an e-mail Saturday that said: “Although I have not polled each of the principals, I do believe that there will be schools or classes that will watch the President’s speech.”
Anne Campbell, superintendent of the Portola Valley School District, said in an e-mail that the district left it up to individual teacher discretion.
“If it fits with their curriculum and they would like to use it as a ‘teachable moment,’ then they’re free to do so. Otherwise, they’ll continue with their regular activities.”
Ms. Campbell said she received one call to “protest the speech and demand that it not be shown to our kids and I’ve received several calls and e-mails from those who are equally passionate in thinking the speech should be shown.”

Nice speech. I hope the kids get the message. I give the Pres alot of credit. It must have been difficult for him to refrain from taking the opportunity to indoctrinate our youth with his socialist perspective.
“Whew,” apparently it must have been too, too much for you to refrain from taking the opportunity to parrot the inane propaganda about Obama’s mythical “socialist perspective.” Give us all a break, why don’t you.
You are correct. I could not refrain. In fact, I sit back and watch for every little oppportunity to point out how Socialism is landing in our laps, and there are still people in denial about it. The fact that you think it is inane propaganda and mythical is both sad and pathetic. Thank goodness there are enough people out there who realize what is happening, and wish they had voted another way. The ether is wearing off. We will be dazed for a while, but it looks like the next generation, while struggling through the aftermath of debt and counterproductive policies, will learn a good history lesson.
Poor President Obama! It must be so exhausting to be a secret Muslim-Kenyan-Communist-Socialist-Fascist killer of grandmas. Perhaps what Fox News really ought to be doing is finding out the secret of his ability to multi-task.
