Happy Valentine's Day to Egypt from San Mateo County

Original post made by Ed, Atherton: other, on Feb 14, 2011

Dear Egypt:
Here from the home of Google and FaceBook we want to extend our congratulations to you for opting for democratic process. Please do an even better job at it than we have here, by studying our mistakes. For instance: you want to watch out for those pesky campaign finance problems that can steal away your voice by special interests. The union influences can also backfire on you as fast as any other big lobby.
Thankfully you already know that the oligarchy can easily usurp the police for protection of their private interest by throwing around money favors and fear, in what can easily become an elite and clubby atmosphere for those who would trade favors with each other, while looking the other way. Please take very good care of your press and especially your judiciary. They will need all the help they can get.
Oh and watch out for the Developers and Financiers disguised as your city fathers--they just can't seem to help themselves from being greedy and will never learn.
The Very Best of luck to you from your fans in SMC.

Well said.

After the momentous events in Egypt, it is privately and quietly dismaying that our elected representatives are probably not feeling even a little anxious in their offices in Washington, Sacramento and -- let's not forget -- Redwood City.

Along with living in a vicious autocracy, corruption lay at the heart of Egyptians' complaints as it is at the heart of complaints here. We desperately need campaign finance reform and the abrogation of the notion that corporations are individuals. Failing that, we need a revolution.

A U.S. autocracy? No, not at all. But entrenched oligarchy in the service of entrenched oligarchy? Yes. A thousand times yes.
