Lurker,
Just for the record Dave Pine never said anything about corruption in San Mateo County. He never said he is interested in cleaning up corruption in San Mateo County.

To Michael Stogner: Who said anything about Pine talking about corruption ON the record? Consider the other possibilities.......

Lurker, your post is the best reason why it's a shame Stogner didn't win. We need leaders who are willing to talk about corruption and problems ON THE RECORD, not "OFF". That's Stogner. Apparently Pine does not have that courage. We need a leader with that courage.

What a sad commentary on our democracy -"Of the 341,303 registered voters, only 24 percent -- or 81,806 -- cast votes in this all-mail special election. " Even walking to their malbox with a postage paid envelope was too hard for over 75% of the voters.

I post this from Turkey, a young democracy, where 73% of the registered voters voted in their last election.
I am embarassed; how sad that we take democracy for granted when so many others in the world would give anything to have what we have been given by those who went before us.

Lurker, This is what I responded to:
"Congratulations to Dave Pine! Let's hope he can do something about cleaning up the corruption in San Mateo County."
I din't mean to single Dave Pine out, when I said he never mentioned this subject during the campaign. Not one of the other 4 candidates did either.
Now lets get real for just a moment, Dave Pine is a wealthy man who is married and haas 2 children.....He has a lot to lose if he stands up to corruption.
Not likely

I meant to say...Not one of the other 5 candidates did either.

Even in congratulating Pine, all I hear are a bunch of unhappy people who disagree with one another. Not the makings of a good start for Dave Pine.
As for Mr. Carpenter comparing elections in Turkey to SAN MATEO COUNTY, it is hilarious......Peter should be reminded of the differences in incomes of those Turks voting so desperately, while our corrupt politics involve nothing but HUGE money and very secretive operations which will be addressed by someone...in fact,I do know that the "rumor" there is a private investigation happening in this "richest" community for the past two years. The name mentioned as the investigator, is the name I was told may have some of the worst offenders doing time.
My days of being disliked for accusing SAN MATEO COUNTY as one of the most corrupt areas, are over. Now people want credit. I give it to you.

New election results just out: Pine beats Holober by a bigger margin- 1556 votes.
Michael Stogner saw his numbers go up, too.
Election results released at 4:30 pm today:

I also congratulate Pine. However, this election just proves once again, that big money carries the day. (exception was Whitman)
Now we shall see if the big Bohannon bucks can buy a seat for Gail Slocum, who seems poised to want a seat at the county level.
With Kelly Fergusson backing her, how can she lose!

I called Dave Pine to congratulate him on his win.

I am always concerned when I here superficial and politically expedient labels applied to community leaders by those who did not support them. I supported Dave Pine, have worked with him and found him to be a person of good conscious, reliable, hard-working, thoughtful and an excellent leader. I feel he will represent my family's interests well (and I am not wealthy.)
There are a lot of wealthy people in San Mateo County. If you have decided that anyone who spends their own money to get their message out in San Mateo County has "bought" their seat, then that's just sour grapes. Perhaps Dave Pine won because, of the folks who actually paid attention to the race and got off of their duffs to vote, felt he was the best candidate. Richard Holober is a good leader and a good candidate, too, and he came in 2nd. I think the best two candidates got the most votes.

Dave Pine and his advisors determined early on that name recognition is very valuable. They felt that Gina Papan's name was worth $300,000, I agree with them in theory I don't know the amount but looks like Dave was right. I support anybody in investing as much of their own money as they want in a campaign.
The media makes it even more expensive when they report to the Voters that there are 4 candidates instead of the 6 candidates.
I know of only one candidate who expressed a negative comment about Dave Pine's spending and that was Richard Holober.

If it weren't for the relentless efforts of a former Menlo Park Mayor it is quite likely that Dave Pine would not have been elected. She is a tour de force and Dave Pine owes her his eternal gratitude.

Good grief! I hope these Almanac posts aren't representative of the overall populace. Dissent and debate are key ingredients of a thriving democracy, but once an election is over we should turn to progress. If you have an issue with Dave Pine's positions or a particular point of view on what needs to happen in San Mateo County, email him. He is now your elected representative. He also happens to be extremely smart, well-informed and in touch with reality. The guy understands finances which is going to be important in the current climate. Yes, he has two kids, a house, a car and a job. Is someone suggesting that we need a Supervisor with no family and nothing to lose? That's the description of a vigilante or the Unibomber. If you believe there is real corruption on the Board of Supervisors -- accepting money for favors, etc. -- then that is illegal and you need to speak up by calling the FBI or another law enforcement agency. Otherwise, you should hold Dave Pine up to the same standards you expect of any official -- to make decisions in an unbiased and reasonable way and not for purposes of payback nor enrichment.

Dave Pine won! I voted for him. I was very dubious about candidates Papan and Holober since they had so much union support and money. Dave is truly a breathe of fresh air. He isn't beholden to anyone or ny special interest group. I read about large campaign donations from nurses (Holober) and firefighters (Papan). When unions make extraordinary donations they have expectations of that candidate.

peter carpenter is a registered user.
IMHO states:"When unions make extraordinary donations they have expectations of that candidate."
How true!! And this is why voters should never vote for a candidate who accepts donations or endorsements from the very people whose salaries and benefits they will be called upon to approve.
I urge candidates to public office to pledge that they will only accept donations and endorsements from individuals who are actually eligible to vote for them.

Every single piece of Pine junk mail had the union symbol on it. I hope he is not a union puppet! I won't know for sure until he starts his term.

Joanna, what union symbol. I just went to my recycling and I only saw Pine's FPPC#.

It is commonly called the "union bug." It is an oval shape and in this case, is placed very close to the addressee. My recycling is gone or I would give more details.
Here is a search link:

I looked and I think it means that the political materials, which are usually ordered en masse, are printed by a union printer.

confused is right. The union bug is indicative of a union print shop.

His endorsements.

confused: you are right. All it means is that it was printed by a union printer.
I am just wondering out loud if it ends there. I hope I'm wrong.

Joanna, simply look at the candidates' endorsements (at their websites) and you will see that the unions lined up their support and money behind Papan and Holober.

He sounds like a real family man.
Just what I don't give a rat's rear to know.
All of you who voted our last supervisor in would be shocked and dismayed if in an investigation revealed an unsavory past, during the 12 year "heyday" of growth and prosperity for those who were not involved in Wall Street. Hardly likely.
If Wall Street fell with such a gigantic thud and had any of you ever known Bernie, you would have loved him. A great guy who I did not put faith in because of the ways he was moving and my CEO friends who didn't get pulled in by LARGE greed. It does come in many sizes and I have also been privvy to outlandish reclessness with the law..........glad to report that a few of them lost 100's of millions and also had to give up political aspirations.
I just wish all of you would stop behaving as if this area is lily white and an example of how COUNTYS should be run.
Wait and see before the gushing over him causes a mini flood.
Those who were in unions prior to 9/11 and Wall St. made up most of what was the middle class in America. This area has to get over the fact that their shed doesn't stink.
I wouldn't mind seeing the return of unions. Even if the members are not of "our crowd".

NON sense = R Gordon

Rich Gordon is not near this world of tv drama to ruin the plot of even that.
It DOES occur to me the Menlo Voter does more Jr. detective work and has admiration for a handful of kind of weak personalities who he attempts to waterboard all of us into loving as much as he.
The major difference between me and most people here, is that I am of the belief that NOTHING on a large scale (???) is ever going to happen unless Unions across America regroup and force change while being more closely aligned to the CONSTITUTION than most of the corrupt people in small offices in failed COUNTYS.
The list of gripes from the high and mighty here have no place in any union hall town meeting. There, the gavel would sound after something of value was decided.
All we have here is a lot of congratulatory notes being sent by an aging population who have very little to offer their progeny.
