A mountain lion was spotted walking near the 400 block of Old La Honda Road in Woodside around 9:15 p.m. Monday, San Mateo County emergency officials said.

People are advised to not approach a mountain lion, especially one that is feeding or with offspring.

Safety officials also advise avoiding hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk and night when mountain lions are most active. Small children should stay away from the cats.

If residents encounter a mountain lion, safety officials said not to run, but to face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving arms and throwing rocks or other objects.

Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation, safety officials said.
