New contract: Portola Valley teachers' pay will depend on performance

In a radical departure from the way teachers have been paid in the past, Portola Valley School District teachers will soon receive raises based on their performance, advanced training, and their students' performance, and not on the number of years they have been in the district.

Older Teachers at CMS sitting day long on those director's chairs and bored and not doing anything . They will get moving !!

That is nice, but before we get too excited, realize the PV teachers are perhaps the highest paid in the country. The last time PVSD published compensation comparisons, we learned that PV teachers make 37% more than Las Lomitas teachers and 67% more than their peer group. That data starts on page 56 of this document. Web Link
So the Admin/School Board get a PR victory, and the teachers union gets their members another raise. A real victory would have been more give backs from the union to restore the programs cut after last year's budget debacle.

I saw that data when the budget came out. These are the totals in the budget and I'd like to understand per teacher numbers and comparisons to other districts. Have you done the math as to avg salary/benes and what is the salary range? Do you have any more insight?

PV Parent,
They make that data very hard to find. But if you are diligent you can glean that average teacher salary at PVSD was approximately $96k last year. That is down from $103k in 11-12 as they cleared out some of the senior teachers, particularly at CMS. In addition they also got an average pension contribution of $10k and their average medical was $12k. And $4k in other benefits.
