Residents interested in the Atherton’s ongoing planning process to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety on town roadways can take part in a Nov. 9 walking and biking tour of key corridors being studied for improvement.
The Saturday tour begins at 9:30 a.m. at Menlo School, in front of Stent Hall, and ends there at noon.
The tour “will serve to broaden the community’s understanding of the issues and enable participants to better engage in a discussion of solutions,” according to an announcement by the town.
Atherton is in the process of developing a bicycle and pedestrian master plan to address safety for people choosing to walk or ride bikes in town. An ad-hoc committee made up of residents is working with staff “to provide detailed input on local conditions, needs and wants,” according to the town.
Key issues include developing safe routes to school for kids who walk or ride their bikes, creating an efficient bike lane system through town, and addressing pedestrian safety on El Camino Real, where there have been numerous pedestrian-vehicle accidents that have resulted in serious injury or death.
Tour participants are urged to bring their own water and, if riding a bike, to wear a helmet.
