In 2014, unlocked mailboxes are absurdly insanely stupid. Unfortunately, they're also the standard. If you don't live somewhere with a locking mailbox, a "secure" mailbox (or a PO Box) is a really good idea.

Yes, I agree with "MP Resident". I got a post office box at the USPS 40 years ago because someone was stealing mail out of the mailboxes in our neighborhood. Once you get a post office box at the USPS, your mail is safe and secure at the post office, so you don't have to worry about your mail being stolen, or identity theft, or fear of unwanted persons getting your residence address. Once you get a post office box, you can renew it online if you want. And, with a post office box address, you don't have to give out your resident address when writing to people, or to people in person. Plus, when you move from one residence to another, you don't have to worry about notifying people of your change of address, because your mailing address (your post office box address) remains the same. Or, if you move a distance away, just get a new post office box address at your nearest post office. What with all the mail fraud, identity theft, and mail being stolen these days, a post office box is your best bet. And, one final point: It’s cheaper and more convenient to have a post office box at the United States Post Office, as opposed to the neighborhood post office stores, where the cost of a post office box is two or three times the cost of a post office box at your local United States Post Office.
