Construction firms heavy donors to bond measure for community colleges

It's a season of giving for construction interests from around the Bay Area. Contributions from architectural firms, builders and organized labor made up much of the $167,600 total to a campaign committee backing Measure H.

MedFit is the company that manages the private Athletic Club at the College of San Mateo. The new bond has $30 million pegged for expansion of the building they are in; a building that is only four years old. I would imagine it's in their interests to support the bond.

Interestingly, just read a comment from Karen Schwarz, who is supporting the current $388 mil bond. In 1999, she said $200 million would be enough to modernize all three campuses. We are already at $1 billion, not counting interest on the bonds or this newest $388 bond.

Latest campaign filing by Committee to Support San Mateo County Community Colleges - Yes on Measure A shows $116,500 in contributions from Oct. 1 to Oct. 18. Notable is a $50,000 contribution from the San Mateo County Community College District Foundation. Foundation CEO Stephani Scott is on the District payroll at $148,000 per year see: Web Link

Stop feeding the beast!. Remember large financial contributions win elections. We need to stop allowing money to shape our politics and political decisions.

The SMCCCD Foundation is a tax-exempt organization. Using donations for political purposes should not be allowed. Foundations can and have established Political Action Committees which are not tax-exempt, for these purposes.

The Foundation's meetings are not open to the public, nor are their books subject to the Public Records Act. It is far too easy for donors to funnel money into a political campaign anonymously. The Foundation should open their books to dispel any suggestions of such activity.

Totals now exceed $400,000. Sorry this looks so messy when pasted here. You can contact the Elections Office on Tower Road and they will be able to email you the 460s. Where the $$ is being spent is shown, too.

Re Mr. Hickey's comments about the foundation, I've tried to find out about the foundation's finances, too, with no success. But if you go to the SMCCD Foundation website, you can see names of those who are big donors. They show up in the campaign contributions, too … Web Link

Suggested correction to campaign finance numbers above.

Since the contributions were made between Oct. 1 and 18, and not the whole campaign, it should be noted that the sheet metal workers' contribution for this period is $1,500. Their overall total is $7,500.

As for expenses, including the two line items on TBWB Strategies that add up to $151,428 is probably double counting expenses for campaign literature that TBWB organized and which were accounted for by the campaign on a separate reporting form.

The total expense for the campaign for this period, per the Elections Office, is $159,140. The overall total is $174,508.

Dave Royce is correct about the $7500. It is cumulative for the calendar year. My error completely. Re the TBWS Strategies spending, I added up each entry on the 460s submitted to the Elections Office. I try to be very careful with data; unfortunately, there are no dates shown for expenditures so the possibility of counting something twice certainly exists.

Dave Royce is correct in saying that campaign expenditures, per the campaign's 460 statements, is at $174,508.49.
