Last night a number of places in Menlo and Atherton were burning wood. Are people not getting the message, or maybe they don't care? Are Spare the Air days something that should be added to city and county alert systems?

Children and adults with the piddling problem of breathing difficulties are not as important as a libertarian exercising his rights to pollute with wood-smoke. Been discussed many times here.

Many people don't get the message about Spare the Air days, and there are exemptions to the wood burning ban. If you have a neighbor who is burning on a spare the air day, why don't you do the nice thing and go talk to them?

The problem is very low publicity of this program. For example, Palo Alto Online never publishes them. Even the announcement here is a full day after the original press release, reducing the number of people who will read it in time to make a difference.

Parent, the article was posted in the news section of this website yesterday morning, the "Spare the Air" day, so your statement is not accurate. Almanac editors post such alerts as soon as we are aware of them.

The article was posted here on Monday, but the press release was issued on Sunday. Spare the Air announcements are always made 24 hours in advance to give people time to find out and make plans.

The Sunday afternoon TV weather reports covered this (for the alert to go into effect on Monday), though, of course, many people don't watch TV anymore and missed that.

Parent - you're incorrect. The Almanac posted via Twitter and this site on Sat., 12/27, about the alert. Not sure why it was reposted here as well, except perhaps as a reminder, which is helpful.

I also noticed a lot of smoke in the air on Sunday.
