A 52-year-old Menlo Park man who was struck by a car on El Camino Real near Palo Alto’s Ventura neighborhood Sunday night died of his injuries early Tuesday morning, Aug. 29, police said.

He was identified as David Leblanc by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at El Camino Real and Barron Avenue, police officer Marianna Villaescusa said. Mr. Leblanc was taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries.

Police said he was wearing dark-colored clothing while crossing east on El Camino Real in a crosswalk on the south side of the intersection, where a driver heading south in a 2006 Toyota Highlander hit him.

The driver, a Palo Alto resident in her 70s, was not injured, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

The woman was not cited or arrested, according to police. Once the department completes its investigation, the case will be sent to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.

Speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors, police said.

The accident prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a Sig-alert, closing El Camino between Barron and Kendall avenues Monday from 12:01 a.m. until about 1:30 a.m.

Police ask that anyone with information on the accident call the department’s 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent by text message or voicemail to (650) 383-8984.

  1. “Police said he was wearing dark-colored clothing while crossing east on El Camino Real in a crosswalk on the south side of the intersection.” Palo Alto police need to get their heads on straight: Who cares what a pedestrian was wearing when he was in a LEGAL CROSSWALK and was KILLED by a CARELESS DRIVER. I want to know what the driver was wearing and doing, if she was using a cellphone or mapping device, if she had loud music on, if there were distracting passengers, if she have a history of reckless driving etc. Stop blaming people simply trying to walk around town for their own deaths.
