Tuesday: Public forum set on plan to fell El Camino redwoods

Original post made on Jan 7, 2019

For residents who are concerned about the future of seven redwood trees sentenced to be cut down near the corner of El Camino Real and Ravenswood Avenue, the city of Menlo Park has scheduled a public forum on the matter.

The usual crap the staff arranges. Thus setting a meeting for 4 PM when few if any can attend is meant to diffuse the issue.

Apparently no Council member will be there...

Any plan to cut these trees is just wrong.

4:00 p.m tomorrow? Really?

Why schedule a public forum at 4:00 pm tomorrow, particularly with so little notice? And also at a time when working people can't attend? What is the real rush?

For a city that calls itself "Tree City", Menlo Park needs to get a new name after approving the removal of more than 100 oaks (many of them Heritage) at one meeting of the Environmental Quality Council in 2018, and later by the Planning Council and City Council.. Even more mature trees have fallen by the City's ax since then.

It really appears that Menlo Park is more interested in development and widening streets than improving the quality of life for its residents. The City's non-existent "plan" never takes into consideration the value of the trees and all that they do to clean the air caused by the ever-growing stream of traffic at that intersection. Trees never win at the EQC or at the City Council, and the evidence is quite clear,.

These mature, and even Heritage, redwoods are an anchor point for the city of Menlo Park and require the City staff and council to carefully consider alternatives before they are too easily persuaded to make what could be a reckless decision. Soon there will only be trees down the center divide. Not the City I have loved for many years.

I urge the City's staff and various governmental departments to find better solutions than the easiest one in front of them.

These trees should have never been planted in that location. It’s certainly not a natural enviorment for Redwoods. The sooner they are gone and replaced with more appropriate trees the better.
CUT Them down !!

Menlo Voter. is a registered user.

There's nothing "heritage" about these trees. They are weeds in their current location. They should be removed.

Maybe Menlo Park should be renamed Menlo City?

The term "Tree City" seems to be a thorn in the sides of many residents.

But not surprising given the predominating "siliconized" state of mind.

That goes down exactly as predicted:

"Take our word for it, those trees are bad".

I also suggest to save the money for the appeal fee...plant a tree instead.

Too late for those trees, as this is a done deal.
