Planned county worker strike suspended pending agreement

A strike planned this week by San Mateo County employees has been averted by a tentative agreement between the county and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union.

About 1,700 county employees with the union’s Local 829 were planning a two-day strike on Wednesday and Thursday to protest health care cuts and what they say are unfair wages.

Details of the agreement were not released. Earlier this month, the county offered a 9 percent cost of living adjustment over three years, as well as additional increases for classifications substantially behind market-rate pay and/or experiencing worker recruitment and retention issues.

A ratification vote on the agreement is set for later this week, union officials said.

The union’s employees had voted 97 percent in favor of the two-day action after negotiations between the union and the county reached an impasse, the union said earlier this month.
