Menlo Park resident's 'Porchraits' offer snapshots of everyday life during shelter-at-home order

Original post made on Apr 7, 2020

A Menlo Park resident spent her spring break taking photos — from at least 10 feet away — of her neighbors to raise money for a local charity.

This article with photos says lots about Menlo Park. All white families in beautiful homes. A photo or two of a family of color or a family in Belle Haven or a family in an apartment on Roble or a homeless person might have sent a more inclusive story.

As my family follows the County's order to shelter in place, I am humbled by our luck to not only have a home, but a garden to tend do in these past weeks. I am aware that there are many in the city who are not so fortunate. I worry about renters who are now unemployed and have families to feed and rent due. I think of small business owners who have put their entire investment in selling a product. Customers are now at home and shops are closed.

This story mirrors what has been gnawing at Menlo Park's conscience for a long time. We have an equity imbalance. Our current mayor understands this and is making equality in housing and education her goal this year. I'd like to see the Almanac take another stab at this story and post more photos that is more inclusive. Thanks

This is such a creative way to raise funds for good cause! To the previous poster's comment, I understand your desire to foster a more equitable community. Yes to that! However, this project is not the enemy. Agnich sent out an open call for photo reservations, no specific fee was attached, and all donations went to Ravenswood Emergency Fund. What a generous use of the photographer's time!

Interesting read. I agree that the article would do better with including more of what's in Roble. It just seems so staged and not very relatable. How about a pic of the homeless people at Caltrain station or the "heroes" going to work as they load up on to the North or South bound trains?
