"That's a side of Katherine you don't usually hear. She was quite sparkly," Barton said. "She was just a character, she really was, even to the end. She never took herself too seriously, and yet she was a very loving person and had so many friends who just adored her because she was a good friend herself."

This perfectly encapsulates the Katherine I came to know. Though I was (regrettably) late in finding myself in her orbit, the loss of the person whose friendship that I cherished these last few years has left a sizable hole in my heart.

Thank you, dear friend, for your intellect, your sense of humor, i.e. the "sparkle" mentioned above, your warmth, and your towering commitment to public service. I'm so glad to have gotten to know you and am mourning the times that we will not get to spend with one another.

You have left me a better person for having had the gift of your friendship.

I got to know Katherine in about the last 10 years even though she lived not far from me for much longer than that. She loved Menlo Park. We used to get into long discussion at Cafe Zoe about things going on in the city and specifically in the Willows. I will definitely miss those conversations as I will miss her.
