As SUHDS officials “pushed back,” Woodside Principal Van Putten offered this apology on Wednesday:

I want to take this opportunity to share my commitment to your physical and emotional safety and sense of belonging that are foundational to teaching and learning at Woodside High School.

Last Friday, I sent an email to the community about our investigation of two images found on campus. I want to apologize for missing a teachable moment. As your principal, I carry the weight and responsibility of keeping all 1,650 students and 180 staff members safe.

The Admin Team and I understand the negative impact that seeing a symbol such as a swastika in any form has on our Woodside community, and for our Jewish students and staff, I acknowledge this symbol is especially painful.
We do not condone anti-semitism, bigotry or hateful symbols or speech of any kind here at Woodside. If you hear or see something, please say something and report it to a trusted adult on campus.

I value and celebrate the beautiful diversity of Woodside HS and I continue to welcome students and staff to share their input and ideas for how we can further raise awareness and educate one another.
