Atherton Police Lieutenant Position "On Hold"

Original post made by Police Beat, Atherton: other, on Mar 17, 2010

After conducting a nationwide search to fill the vacant Atherton Police Lieutenant job, the position is now "on hold", with no mention in council packets about the results of the search.

After Town Manager Jerry Gruber was assailed for not involving residents in his own appointment of Mike Guerra as Chief of Police, Guerra convened a committee of Atherton residents consisting of furniture store owner Marc Flegel and police loyalist Doug Devivo to advise him on the search. Feathers were ruffled when local police legends John Ruggiero and Chief Dick Moore were not consulted in this process.

Although Guerra is expected to report that he will continue to perform both the chief and lieutenant jobs to "save money", as recently as two months ago, both he and Gruber strenuosity argued with the city council that the position is absolutely required. Rumor is that the position is not being filled because the internal candidate Guerra had earmarked for promotion is too close to the current police report alteration scandal for comfort. He wants things to cool down before promoting him.

Time will tell. In the meantime, the Town is awaiting a statement from embattled Police Chief Mike Guerra about his Lieutenant promotion decision.
