Boys Varsity Baseball: M-A Pounds Folsom, 15-4, to Capture Third Place in Cordova Easter Tournament

Original post made by Bob Moriarty, Team Parent, Portola Valley: Ladera, on Apr 1, 2010

Menlo-Atherton pounded a season-high 15 hits, including six doubles, to crush Folsom, 15-4, and capture third place (out of 10 teams) in the Cordova Easter Tournament Thursday afternoon in Rancho Cordova. The victory improved the Bears’ overall season record to 8-6.

Twelve different M-A players joined the hit parade, led by Jeff Keller’s three hits (two doubles and four RBI) and two hits by Nils Gilbertson (one double, two RBI). Chace Warren contributed a three-run, bases-loaded double in the first inning to stake M-A to an early lead.

Winning pitcher Nils Gilbertson surrendered 10 hits over five innings, but did his best work with men on base, consistently pitching out of trouble. Folsom left 11 runners on base – including two in the first inning when it had men on second and third with no outs. Gilbertson posted six strikeouts while walking just one.

Kyle Zirbes relieved Gilbertson in the sixth, striking out two with bases loaded to end the inning.

M-A returns to action this week with two PAL Bay Division league games against Woodside.
