A few minutes with Martin Litton

Original post made on Sep 11, 2012

Here's a softball question for an environmentalist: With climate change largely absent from the national consciousness, if you could issue royal decrees in your corner of the planet and set an example, what would you order to be done? Noted environmental activist and longtime Portola Valley resident Martin Litton played along one recent morning while sitting in the shade at a Triangle Park picnic table.

Control in growth is needed, we could have build more high density low rise buildings. It is nice to live in place like P.V. but most just need a home for their families, and a job. We do need to get into the great beauty of our country and world, we do need to share instead of having 500 front lawns, 500 double or triple car garages, with 500 swimming pools. We need trains and street cars near our jobs, schools and homes, we need to run street cars right to the front gates of our great parks, less drivers and more people with less stress sitting under a tree or on top of a mountain. We need farms, ranchers and places for the buffalo to roam and the wild horses to run free. Instead we got people buying places in the country and throwing up fences and cities growing in place where no city or burb should have been built. How much water is wasted with 500 front lawns and 500 back lawns, free parking, single story malls. If I could do a royal decree it would be far different then wishing jobs aways.
