This is all well and good, but are we also going to immerse the Mexican kids in English, or are we going to continue to have a biforcated education system? The "crucial bilingualism" isn't for the English is for those who come from whatever corner of the world they come from. They need to learn English to be successful, as I would need to learn their language to be successful in their country. Denying this is ridiculous. Perhaps we should all pull back from the new religion of diversity just a bit, and think about what is really going to benefit the kids in the real world and the long term.

What's funny is that Palo Alto has been discussing this topic--Spanish in OUR schools--for weeks. See Web Link with over 125 posts!

How can they care more about this than we do?

The Menlo Park school population includes children who have immigrated or moved here from over 20 countries, and there are excellent programs in place to help them learn English. Those children have the benefit of fluency in 2 (or more) languages. Why shouldn't children born to English-speaking families also have the opportunity to achieve bilingual fluency at an early age?

The growth of the schools has had many drawbacks, including the expense of renovating all the facilities. Being able to offer expanded programs is one of the few benefits. Hooray for the school board for approving the class; I hope Ken Ranella gets on board with it too.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
