Please please please, stop traveling (yes even to Tahoe and especially to Hawaii and Mexico) and stop gathering. Our kids deserve your sacrifice.

AMRW,

There is more to life than sheltering within 4 walls. Kids and adults need to get out and do things. We are approaching a year under Covid-19 restrictions and it has had a significant , adverse impact on children as well as adults. There are arbitrary "120 mile" limits to travel before a person needs to quarantine? Where does that number come from and what is significant about 120 miles? I know people who travel 500+ miles and do it in a much safer way than others who don't travel at all but still gather with others and don't wear masks. Which is the bigger risk? Common sense is called for here.

I am all for people getting out, taking kids out to have experiences and to travel but to do it in a safe manner. Wear masks, social distance and observe all the protocols that are recommended by the CDC. If your travel puts you and your family at risk then quarantine yourselves for the recommended amount of time. Childrens and adults mental health is just as important as their physical health

Brian,
You mention "observe all procotols from the CDC". Today, the CDC website says "COVID-19 Alert: Cases are Extremely High. Avoid Travel. Travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. CDC recommends that you do not travel at this time. Delay travel and stay home to protect yourself and others from COVID-19."
I'm not suggesting people not leave their houses, I'm imploring that they make some sacrifices to get kids back to in-person school as safely as possible. Kids and parents mental health is suffering from being out of school.
For disclosure sake, I have no children and I work in a local school district.

Thank you local superintendents for this important message! Our kids are in school in Menlo Park, and we appreciate this privilege tremendously. The administrators and teachers are doing an amazing job, and we owe it to them -- and to each other -- to follow careful distancing, travel and testing guidelines. Our family has cancelled travel plans, and we are instead spending a lot of time exploring local hikes and beaches. We do miss the snow and mountains this winter, but it's lovely to get to know our local environment so well. We're also teaching our kids the importance of working together for the common good. It's a different year for sure, and like others I also can get kind of cranky. Thinking about the work and sacrifices of our local teachers motivates us to make our own sacrifices.
