I am very glad to read that Mayor Barrow considers the safety of our community's children to be his top priority as a town council member. Well done, Mr. Mayor. You have my full support on this issue.

Unfortunately, this view isn't shared by all the council members. At last week's town council meeting, council member Tom Shanahan repeatedly expressed opposition to the town spending any funds on improving the safety of our children. He went so far as to publically state that any safety improvements should be funded directly by the parents of the children who care about this issue.

I wholeheartedly disagree with his position. Protecting our children as they walk or bike to and from school is not only an appropriate use of town funds, it is, perhaps, the best use of our pooled community resources.

We do not live in some model libertarian utopia. We live in the real world where government has many positive impacts on the lives of our residents. I invite Council Member Shanahan to join Mayor Barrow in the real world and become an advocate for the safety of our children.
