Ms. Dremann as a follow up to this article could you please check with Menlo Park and East Palo Alto city officials to see how many of the posted $1000 fines were issued on July 3rd and July 4th for firework use. It would be a good question to ask in light of the 916 and 769 (more than 4 times the “unhealthy” level).
Also, could you check with East Palo Alto officials to see if any $1000 fines were issued around the Newbridge and Laurel Streets intersection on July 4th? There were fireworks shot off from there starting at noon of the 4th and then continually increasing till 2am on the 5th. The next day there were boxes of fireworks piled up to 5 feet high on two of the corners and enough spent fireworks and sawdust (as well as toxic substances from said fireworks) in the intersection to make it look like every fireworks show in the Bay Area dumped their waste in that intersection. Based on experiencing that “show” and smelling the smoke (even a few blocks away) with my windows closed while trying to get some sleep before work the next day, I would assume the 916 and 769 measures on Hamilton were drifting over from the Newbridge/Laurel intersection.
Just in case the answer is 0 fines being issued (as I would assume based on the constant fireworks over here in EPA before the 4th) could you please ask the city why they wasted money on signs and mailers claiming a $1000 fine for fireworks? Maybe follow that question up with a question on the EPA’s non enforcement of laws against speeding, running stop signs, and doing donuts in intersections. Have they seen rates of speeding and accidents go down with the non enforcement of traffic laws? Is that the strategy for fireworks?
Maybe this is all part of a city plan to increase quality of life for residents and home prices/values with anarchism. Or a city plan designed for a city where less than 30% (I think less than 20% based on all of the cars on city streets) of residents even vote in city elections
