Meredith Phillips, who started Perseverance Press in the garage of her Menlo Oaks home 30 years ago, will talk about her years of mystery publishing before the Mystery Readers group at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Menlo Park Library.
An exhibit of all the books Ms. Phillips has published will be on display at the Menlo Park Library through the month of May.
Ms. Phillips lived in Menlo Park for 21 years, publishing 10 books during that period as a one-person press, before moving to Palo Alto. Ten years ago, Ms. Phillips joined childhood friend, John Daniel, to form Perseverance Press/John Daniel & Company. Mr. Daniel, formerly a manager of Kepler’s Books, lived at one time in Portola Valley. He and his wife, Susan, now live in McKinleyville.
The combined firm of Perseverance/Daniel has published more than 40 mysteries in the last 10 years.
The Menlo Park Library has had a long association with Ms. Phillips, according to Friends of the Library volunteer Jackie Drew. Ms. Phillips, who began her career as a writer, wrote her second book, “Death Spiral,” in longhand one summer on the Menlo library patio.
Perseverance Press was honored May 2 with an Agatha Award from the Malice Domestic Mystery Convention in Washington, D.C., for its non-fiction book “How to Write Killer Historical Mysteries” by Kathy Lynn Emerson.
The Mystery Readers Group meets at 7:15 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the downstairs library meeting room. The library is located at 800 Alma St. in Menlo Park. For more formation, call Jackie Drew at 325-4048.
