A suspected burglar was arrested by Atherton police on Tuesday, July 31, after allegedly entering a home on Middlefield Road north of Fair Oaks Lane that morning, according to a statement from police.

Officers responded after the caretaker of the home called police at about 7:30 a.m., saying a man had entered the residence through a back door, police said. The caretaker reportedly confronted the man, who claimed that he owned the property and the property next door, before he walked out, police said.

About 15 minutes later an Atherton police sergeant saw the suspect, a transient who police said had recently been released from the Santa Clara County jail, walking on Middlefield Road in unincorporated Redwood City. Police said the 33-year-old man, who had been serving 45 days for petty theft, ID theft, and possession of burglary tools, was found with stolen property, a set of keys that belonged to another Middlefield Road resident.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property.

Atherton police ask that anyone with more information or video surveillance footage of the suspect contact the investigations unit at 650-688-6500.

The Almanac’s policy is to withhold the names of those arrested for most crimes until the District Attorney’s Office has determined there is sufficient evidence to file charges in the case. See the policy here.
