Caltrain will host a community meeting in Atherton to discuss construction activities for electrifying the rail line on Monday, Dec. 17.

Upcoming construction activities along the Caltrain line in town include utility potholing and installation of the overhead contact system foundations and poles. Pole installation will begin later this month and last two to three months, said Dan Lieberman, Caltrain public affairs specialist. Wire installation will begin in spring 2019 and take about two to three months as well, he said.

This is part of Caltrain’s plan to electrify the corridor from the San Francisco Caltrain station at 4th and King streets to around the Tamien station in San Jose. The project will replace diesel-run trains with electric trains.

The electrification is expected to lead to more frequent and/or faster train service, and reduce noise, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The meeting will cover project updates in general and the construction in Atherton.

The electrification is scheduled to be operational by 2022.

The meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Jennings Pavilion in Holbrook-Palmer Park, 150 Watkins Ave. in Atherton.

  1. We can’t wait for them to get rid of those noisy, high-pollution diesel trains. The city should help them to accelerate the process if possible.

    Atherton has done everything possible to impede and delay any changes to Caltrain.
